Anne Murphy | Caste in Canada: A Community-Engaged Research Project

Friday, October 27th, 2023, 10:30–11:30 AM, via Zoom

This is an online talk about the “Caste in Canada” project with Professor Anne Murphy (UBC), Jai Birdi (Executive Director, Chetna Association of Canada), Mohini, a project participant, and members of the Migration Narratives Group. The “Caste in Canada” project seeks to document the oral histories of people in Canada who have been impacted by caste discrimination and who have fought to counter it. Interviews for the project took place over the course of 2021–2023 and were conducted by one of the two co-primary investigators for the project, Dr. Anne Murphy (UBC) and Dr. Suraj Yengde (Harvard), over Zoom or in person. The resulting videos were edited by students and prepared for public dissemination. Funding to support the project was provided by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, through a Partnership Engage grant, in collaboration with the Chetna Association of Canada, an anti-caste discrimination organization based in Canada, with the additional support of the Hari Sharma Foundation.
